Upon the Peak 在山 2025 Ink and colour on paper 134 × 74 cm In this work, bamboo trees serve as the foreground, creating a visual "screen" that not only enhances the spatial layering with the landscape behind but also divides the picture into multiple irregularly shaped sections, each becoming an independent scene in its own right. This approach draws on the concept of "leaking windows" in Chinese garden architecture, allowing the viewer's gaze to penetrate the lattice window and draw the exterior view into sight. This method of peering from the foreground into the background echoes the "deep distance" methods of traditional landscape painting. By employing a top-down, bird's-eye perspective, the landscape is captured what would otherwise be a "level distance" vista, seamlessly integrating the "three distances" into a shifting visual experience. |
