Even the Trees

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has borne the traces and memories of my life for over a decade. The myriad of trees in campus, with their diverse postures, and the landscape embraced by surrounding islands, constitute my most profound perception of CUHK's scenery. "Even the Trees" is composed of ten individual paintings, each depicting a different tree species found in United College. I regard each tree as an independent entity, each with its own posture, character, and life trajectory, much like every student who traverses the campus, each growing and developing independently.

These seemingly separate tree scenes are connected by a panoramic view of the mountains and sea in the background. From the hills of Tai Po, to the distant mountain of Pat Sin Leng, and the closer view of Ma On Shan, the sea and islands surrounding CUHK form an underlying thread, integrating the ten paintings into a cohesive whole. This landscape with both independent and intimately connected constitutes my testament to CUHK's geography, history, and time. It is an intangible bond between humanity and nature, and a memory of the space.
